The Mortal Coil By David Herbert Lawrence
The Mortal Coil David Herbert Lawrence Books
Just one story, but with DHL I'll take it. Indeed I think his stories have the mystery of a holy text. You are stunned and a bit lost in the insights, so uniquely powerful are they. The description of the sensations Marta feels in the arms of her dissolute, yet sensitive officer are the most intense and at the same time mystical I have read. At the midpoint of the story, after the lovers (and despite everything they are mutually attracted like two poles of a magnet) sleep together, the officer takes a long ride with his troops, at the end of which is his nemesis. It is similar to the wandering of the the attendant to "The Prussian Officer," in the story of that name. That journey is just as final. The natural world is God itself in both stories, a silently watching and punishing one. I don't know how else to put it. Lawrence is the poetic story-teller of his century. He *was* a god.Product details
